Doctor meeting with patient:
I chose to specialize in podiatry, uh, when I was an undergrad. Uh, I was able to shadow a podiatrist and it was a great experience. And I knew, um, I knew I wanted to go into health care. My degree was in biology and chemistry, and it was a great fit. Foot health is important because it really affects your overall health. If you have a foot issue it limits your activity. Think about anything you do requires weight bearing, and if that’s limited then your overall health suffers. So my philosophy is, um,
Doctor talking:
getting a patient to really tell me what’s going on, what kind of activities they do, what are they looking to do, what are their goals. Um, if we can work together to get a plan together it’s my responsibility to give them all the information they need to, um, make a good decision about their treatment, um, give them a good diagnosis, give them their treatment options.
Doctor meeting with patient:
Um, what works best for you might not be what works best for somebody else, and if we discuss it together let’s work on it together I think we get the best outcomes, and I think that’s what really works.
Treating Patients of All Ages on screen:
Um, the patients I see vary in ages. I see a lot of children with skin conditions, um, warts, ingrown toenails. Sometimes they’ll have orthopaedic conditions if they’re in-toeing, uh, or limping, issues like that. Um, adolescents tend to have trouble with growth plate injuries, uh, pain with growth plate injuries, a lot of kids with sports injuries.
Doctor on computer:
If you look at any sport, you know, basketball, football, soccer, tennis, running, um, they’re so much intensity, stop-and-go motion, back-and-forth, side-to-side, um, it really requires, um, a little extra effort, um, on the foot and ankle
Doctor talking:
Middle age people have overuse injuries, a lot of heel pain, um, patients with bunions, hammertoes, conditions like that. And I see a lot of elderly patients that, um, can probably, not take care of their feet anymore for whatever reason
Caring for Patients with Diabetes on screen:
You know, it’s really a three-fold problem, the reason diabetics really need to look at their foot issues. Number one: it typically affects their vascular health, so diabetics generally have a decreased vascular flow.
Doctor examining patient:
The second problem, uh, is the neuropathy that you get with diabetes. Oftentimes patients with diabetes lose the sensation in the feet, um, or have hypersensation in the feet, burning, tingling, um, problems like that. Um, and if you think about loss of sensation especially, um, if you don’t feel pain, um, things can go on that, for too long, that can become a problem. And the third thing, uh, that’s related with diabetes directly is the blood sugar. If the blood sugar circulates high in the body, your body’s ability to fight an infection essentially shuts off. So, uh, those three things working in conjunction can be extremely problematic.
Doctor talking to patient:
I think what I enjoy most about being a physician is watching a patient improve, and basically not need our services anymore. It’s nice to, um, find a solution for someone and help them get better and I think podiatry is a great field. People tend to feel better after they see us.
