Doctor talking:
I became a physical therapist here at Palos in 1977. In 1977 through 1980 I worked with all the orthopaedic surgeons here. And I felt as though I could do a very good job with my patients, and I felt I could do more. So I then went back to school, because either I could sit down and shut up and stay a physical therapist here at Palos or I could become an

orthopaedic surgeon. Hence I came back to Palos and I’ve worked here as an orthopaedic surgeon since 1995. Whether it’s related to arthritis, whether it’s a pediatric problem, whether it’s some concern that they would have which deals with anything related to joint movement, related to muscle strength--anything that gets you from here to there--if you’re having trouble with that you can see an orthopaedic surgeon, because my specialty is dealing with those problems related to the bone and the muscle and the ligaments and the tendons. I take care of all ages, and if I don’t know it, I know the best people and I can get them to the best person that I think can do the best job for them.
Philosophy of Care on screen:
My philosophy is that I have to be able to understand the entire person: their

family, where they came from and who they are. And they leave something of an imprint on me as I hope I leave an imprint

on them, because I care about them. I need to understand them before we do anything serious, anything that scares them, I can be more reassuring if I understand them. Many of my patients have a deep

richness to them, and if not then it’s their kids. I’ve met them, I’ve met their kids, and they have a much richness that they bring to my life which I hope I can give them some of mine. I’ve known Palos Medical Group, I’ve known the Palos, uh, Medical staff, uh, for over 40 years, I know everybody on the staff. They are highly qualified. They are as good as anybody else that I’ve worked with at the university. I can make a difference.

I can make a difference in someone’s lives, every day. I wake up in the morning, they’re going to depend on me to make

the best qualified decision, whether it’s to do surgery or not to do surgery. So every encounter that I have has a great responsibility that I must understand them. I cannot take it casually. It is a very serious bond that I have with my people, and that’s why I take time to know them before I can just casually say, “well, you need surgery,” or “you don’t” because I’m going to make a difference and I want to be able to live with that difference. Every morning when I get up, and I look in the mirror, I have to say I’m going to do the best that I can for the people that I care about, and those are my patients.
