Palos Hospital named to Healthgrades 2020 America’s 50 Best Hospitals for ninth consecutive year

Palos Hospital today announced that it has achieved the Healthgrades 2020 America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™. The distinction places Palos Hospital in the top one percent of nearly 4,500 hospitals assessed nationwide for its consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems. Palos Hospital has received the America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award for nine consecutive years (2012-2020).

“This award is a testament to the caliber of our staff and their unwavering dedication to our culture of excellence,” says Terrence Moisan, MD, President and CEO of Palos Health. “The collective contributions of all staff members made this designation possible.”

“The recipients of the Healthgrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award are committed to high quality standards throughout the entire organization,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “We congratulate the recipients of this award as they provide the best care possible for their patients.”

From 2016 through 2018, patients treated in hospitals achieving the award had, on average, a 27.1 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award, as measured across 19 rated conditions and procedures for which mortality is the outcome.*

And during that same period, if all hospitals performed similarly to those achieving the Healthgrades America's 50 Best Hospitals Award, 188,768 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, patients treated for Heart Failure at a hospital that achieved the award had, on average, a 33.8 percent lower risk of dying during their hospital stay than if treated at a hospital that did not receive the award.*

Palos Hospital is the only hospital in Illinois to receive Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention Procedures™, America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care™ and America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery™ for five years in a row (2016-2020). Palos Hospital was also recognized as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Pulmonary Care™ for nine years in a row (2012-2020) and one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for General Surgery™ for eight years in row (2013-2020).

Recipients of the Healthgrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2020 study period (2016 through 2018), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 most common inpatient conditions and procedures — as measured by objective performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
