Palos Health now offers an alternative to blood thinner medications for many patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common type of irregular heartbeat.

Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) implant devices, such as Watchman™, prevent potential stroke-causing clots from leaving from the heart. In the minimally invasive procedure, an interventional cardiologist inserts a permanent implant to seal off the pouch in the heart where blood clots commonly form. Heart tissue grows over the tiny implant and patients are able to eventually come off of blood thinners.

Benefits of the Implanted Device

  • May eliminate long-term need for blood thinners
  • Often descreases risk of stroke in patients with AFib not caused by heart valve problems
  • May reduce serious bleeding risks caused by blood thinners
