Challenge? Meet Opportunity
We appreciate that you may feel a sense of fear and face some physical challenges following a cardiovascular event. That’s why we address these issues as part of your treatment plan. In fact, sometimes, rehabilitation is the treatment. Cardiac rehab can help you treat an existing condition, recover from surgery, receive education to help you improve your overall health and reduce your risk of future cardiac events.
Multi-Phase Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
At Palos, cardiac rehabilitation is all about learning and doing in a comprehensive, multi-phase program of exercise, education, risk-factor control and regular evaluation. You will benefit from our medically supervised approach that tailors a program of care specific to your needs—returning you to your highest possible level of activity—physically, emotionally and socially. We’re certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR), so you’re assured of receiving care and guidance that follows nationally established standards.
Cardiac Rehab Phase I
Phase I of your rehabilitation starts when you’re hospitalized for a cardiac condition or event. While you’re in the hospital, you’ll learn about your condition and better ways to take care of yourself. We will help you get back on your feet and perform the basic skills of daily life.
Cardiac Rehab Phase II
Phase II focuses on exercise. First, you’ll uncover your specific risk factors for heart disease, whether it's hypertension, high cholesterol, overweight, smoking, eating and exercise habits or stress. We will help you get those factors under control with healthy lifestyle changes. You will receive ongoing education and support regarding your medication, stress management and physical conditioning. We encourage your loved ones to come and support you through the process.
The exercise component of Phase II begins with a health evaluation. Then, our exercise physiologist/registered nurse collaborates with the Palos Cardiac Rehabilitation Medical Director to develop an exercise program tailored to your individual needs. Each week, you will join us for exercise and education in our facility at Palos Hospital. Your vitals and heart rate are monitored throughout each exercise session as we progress you toward your fitness goal.
