Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP)

More Information

Senior Resources offers assistance to Medicare beneficiaries by appointments, mail and telephone. To learn more about the services offered at Palos Health or to schedule an appointment, call (708) 923-4785.

For decades, Palos Health has been at the forefront in assisting Medicare beneficiaries and their families in making informed health insurance decisions.

The Senior Resources department at Palos Health is recognized by the Illinois Department on Aging as a sponsoring organization for the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP).

As a SHIP sponsoring organization, Palos Health has trained counselors who are available to provide objective information on health insurance, advocacy assistance or referral if appropriate.

“Our clients are very appreciative of the services we provide, and when we tell them it’s a free service, there are smiles all around,” says Janet Kohler, who’s been a part of the SHIP program at Palos for 20 years. “It’s rewarding to help our clients when they need it most.”

SHIP counselors are trained to:

  • Educate consumers and answer questions about Medicare, Medicare Supplements, long-term care insurance, Medicare HMOs, private fee-for-service and other health insurance.
  • Organize and assist in filing Medicare and Medicare Supplement claims.
  • Analyze Medicare Supplement and long-term care policies.

The program is a valuable tool with a mission to educate, advocate, counsel and empower people eligible for Medicare to make informed health care decisions. SHIP currently has 186 offices throughout Illinois staffed by a total of more than 600 volunteer counselors.
