Back Pain Relief
More than 80 percent of us will experience back problems at some point during our lifetimes. Poor body mechanics, an aging spine and hectic lifestyle are typically to blame. For most back pain sufferers, conservative (non-surgical) treatment alleviates the problem. At Palos Health, located in the Palos Heights area, we are dedicated to not only treating your back pain but returning you to your regular activities as quickly and safely as possible.
Common Sources of Back Pain
Some of the most common sources of back pain include:
- Muscle Strain, typically caused by improper or heavy lifting, or a sudden awkward movement;
- Herniated Discs, which result when a disc herniates and puts pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerves;
- Spinal Stenosis, which is defined as a narrowing of the spinal canal that can create irritation and inflammation of the adjacent nerves, and;
- Degenerative Disc Disease, which results over time from wear and tear on the discs.
Back Pain Evaluation and Treatment
To determine the source of back pain, a physiatrist, a physician who specializes in physical medicine, will conduct a comprehensive health history and physical exam and then, if necessary, order laboratory tests and/or radiological studies to pinpoint the problem.
Once a diagnosis is made, treatment typically begins with a conservative non-surgical approach. Applications of hot or cold, massage, activity modification, physical therapy and medications are some of the more common conservative treatments. If pain persists, injections may be recommended.
McKenzie Trained Physical Therapists
Palos Health is pleased to be home to McKenzie Trained and certified physical therapists who specialize in resolving issues specifically related to back pain. This means placing an emphasis on educating and involving each patient in their own treatment. With ongoing guidance, patients learn to understand and self-manage their condition long after initial therapy sessions have been completed.
